Glass Table Scratch Repair: Removing Scratches from a Black Glass Table Top

Can scratches be removed from a glass table?

This project follows the professional repair of a badly scratched, black-backed glass tabletop from the first assessment through six controlled sanding and polishing stages.

Black-backed glass table · Multiple visible scratches
Repaired at the customer’s property · Completed without replacing the top

Project outcome

Multiple glass table scratches removed without replacing the tabletop

The damaged surface was progressively refined and polished until the scratches and repair marks were no longer visible.

The problem

Years of use had left multiple scratches visible across a black-backed glass table top.

The challenge

Bright overhead lighting highlighted every mark, while the metal frame limited polishing access at the edge.

The result

The scratches were removed, shine restored and the existing tabletop retained rather than replaced.

The glass table repair brief

A badly scratched black glass table with nowhere for marks to hide.

The dark backing and well-lit ceiling made the glass scratches especially noticeable. Before polishing began, the surrounding walls, floor and nearby surfaces were protected from water and polishing compound.

Because the tabletop sat inside a metal frame, the repair area also had to be controlled carefully near the edge. The aim was to remove the damaged glass evenly being sure to remove all the scratches.

Glass table scratch repair — Stage 1

Remove the glass to beneath the deepest level of the scratches.

The first stage used the coarsest suitable cutting disc because the tabletop contained extensive, visible scratching.

Each damaged area was widened gradually until the separate repair zones joined into one controlled working area.

The technician worked the surface evenly, removing the glass to beneath the level of the deepest scratches to guarantee their full removal.

The next stage begins only after all the original scratch lines are no longer visible.

Glass table scratch repair — Stage 2

Refine the first cut with a finer abrasive.

Once the original scratches had been removed, a finer cutting disc was used across the whole repair area. The purpose was no longer to chase individual scratches, but to remove every trace left by the first, coarser stage.

The working area was increased slightly and treated as one surface. Keeping the sanding pattern even helps prevent optical distortion in the finished glass.

Glass table scratch repair — Stage 3

Continue refining while keeping the glass surface flat.

A still finer abrasive reduced the marks created during Stage 2. The entire area was worked evenly several times, with careful checks under the available lighting before moving forward.

This progressive approach is essential: each stage must fully remove the previous sanding pattern or those marks can remain visible after polishing.

Glass table scratch repair — Stage 4

Prepare the repaired area for final finishing.

By Stage 4 the original glass table scratches had already been removed. The focus was now on replacing the previous abrasive pattern with a much finer and more uniform finish.

The technician continued to keep the whole repair zone level, paying particular attention to the framed edge where normal polishing movement was restricted.

Glass table scratch repair — Stage 5

Complete the finest sanding stage before polishing.

The final cutting disc produced a sufficiently fine surface for polishing. The repair area was checked from different angles to confirm that the earlier sanding marks had been removed consistently.

Only after the glass showed an even, fine finish was it ready for the clarity-restoration stage.

Glass table scratch repair — Stage 6

Polish the glass table top back to clarity.

A specialist polishing pad and glass-polishing compound removed the fine pattern left by Stage 5. The area was polished evenly and inspected repeatedly under the overhead light.

This final stage restored the shine, leaving no visible transition between the repaired area and the surrounding tabletop.

The finished glass table

The scratches were removed and the black glass top restored.

All visible glass table scratches and traces of the sanding process were removed.

The tabletop returned to a shiny, scratch-free appearance without the cost, delay and difficulty of sourcing a replacement black-backed glass top.

This project was completed out of hours to minimise disruption at the customer’s business premises in a matter of hours.

The photographs show the same table before repair and after the final polish.

Really pleased with the job Matt did to get my loft window and balustrade glass as good as new. He explained the process and potential outcomes clearly. Arrived promptly and cleaned up afterward. Fitted in an extra small repair with no fuss. Would be happy to recommend and a lot cheaper and less hassle than replacing the glass. I also learned how to clean windows properly! Worth the money.

The most common questions about scratched tabletops, polishing results and repair suitability.
Can scratches be removed from a glass table?

Yes. Scratches can be removed from suitable flat glass tabletops through controlled sanding and polishing. The glass type, scratch depth, edge position, coatings and access will be assessed first.

Yes even deep scratches can be repaired, they just take more sanding to be fully removed.

A professional repair expands and blends the working area through progressively finer stages to keep the surface even. Poor technique or working too small an area can create distortion, which is why specialist equipment and experience matter.

Tinted and black-backed glass tables can be repaired when the colour or backing is not a vulnerable surface film. We check the construction, coatings, frame and damage position before confirming the work.
